How to spot misleading solar panel grant claims
Capital subsidies vs bill savings, eligibility, and marketing that sounds like government cash off your electricity.
Wording to clarify calmly
| You might hear | Often means | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Government grant | Named capital scheme | Eligibility in writing |
| Funding available | May be finance | APR, ownership |
| Free panels | Lease or PPA | Roof rights, exit terms |
| Scheme ends Friday | Sales urgency | Time to read contract |
None of this assumes a particular installer is acting badly. It reflects how easy it is to mix subsidy, finance and bill savings in one sentence.
Eligibility
Schemes may depend on EPC rating, property type, installer certification or technology pairing. Get written confirmation you qualify before you rely on a net price in the quote.
After the grant
Ask whether system size matches use, export and import assumptions are realistic, and maintenance or inverter replacement is in your own budget planning.
Grants can make a good install more affordable. The quote should still prove payback and scope without the grant doing the arguing for it.
